about

This recording is more than just a father and daughter making music together, it is the continuation of our musical heritage. My great-grandmother, Nancy Jane Gambill Creech (1850-1921), my grandmother, Elizabeth Ann Creech Lambert (1885-1974), and my grandfather, Robert Lee Lambert (1883-1974), played what we now call old-time music - they simply called it music.

These ancestors grew up in rural Kentucky, where the labor was hard and a dance was a means used to forget about the tough life they lived and have some fun and entertainment. The love of this music was passed down to us, where it is resides in our blood.

Nancy Jane was a well known fiddler in her community of Elliot Co., Kentucky. Whenever a local dance was held, the neighbors coaxed her into playing the fiddle so that everyone could dance and enjoy the fine music. Nancy Jane played her music during the time when it was unacceptable for a woman to play a fiddle in public. She must have been quite the fiddler.

We have gathered these tunes from many sources. One of the here-recorded tunes is “Nancy Blevins”. We have a foremother by that name, from the same area, living at the same time as the person for whom this tune is named. I can’t completely prove it, but I enjoy thinking that this is our Nancy Jane when we play it.

Though the tunes come from many sources, some of them were introduced to me by the Wednesday old-time jammers, who meet weekly a little west of Minneapolis, MN. Thank you for letting me sit in.

This project was recorded in Silver Bay, MN, where Audrey and I retreated from civilization in April, 2018, to enjoy and nature and fulfill a long-time dream of making an old-time fiddle tune recording together. Thanks, Audrey.
